Got a red tag? Here's what it actually means.

A red tag isn't a suggestion. It's a formal notice that your fire system is out of code compliance. Here's what it is, what's at stake, and how we get you cleared.

DO NOT REMOVEOUT OFSERVICEDEVICE / SYSTEM OUT OF SERVICEDATEBYREASON: FAILED INSPECTION

What is a fire red tag?

A red tag is a notice from your fire marshal or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) that a fire protection system (your alarm or extinguishers) has failed inspection and is considered out of service. The physical tag reads “DO NOT REMOVE / OUT OF SERVICE,” and it stays until the system is repaired and re-inspected.

In plain terms: the system can't be trusted to do its job, so it's flagged as non-compliant until it's fixed.

Why the AHJ issues one

Red tags come out of a routine or triggered inspection when something falls short of code: an overdue test, a failed device, low pressure, missing documentation, or a component that's past due. The AHJ's job is to protect the people inside your building, so anything that compromises the system gets tagged.

Non-compliance can mean citations and escalating fines from your AHJ.

Questions

Red tag FAQ

What exactly is a red tag?

A red tag is a notice from the fire marshal or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) that a fire protection system has failed inspection and is out of service. It means the system can’t be relied on until it’s repaired and re-inspected.

Can I keep my business open with a red tag?

It depends on your AHJ and how serious the issue is, but a red-tagged system often puts your occupancy, insurance, and liability at risk. The safest move is to get it cleared as fast as possible. That’s exactly what we do.

How fast can you clear a red tag?

We typically respond within 24 hours and are on-site within one business day. The time to full clearance depends on the repair, but we move quickly and keep you updated the whole way.

Which systems can get red-tagged?

Fire alarm and fire extinguisher systems can both be red-tagged after a failed inspection. We service and clear red tags on both.

Do you handle the paperwork with the AHJ?

Yes. We document the repair and provide the digital records your AHJ and insurer need to sign off and lift the tag.
